Soroptimists Celebrate Success
news from around the region

District I
Chrisann Nicholson, Director

District I is fabulous! The energy is almost overpowering. We are continuing our project, S.O.S. for Kids. Our suitcases for foster children have been delivered to the Department of Social Services in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, and we are in the process of solidifying the ongoing plan.

The San Ramon spring cancer walk is progressing. Oakland is considering a partnership with the Oakland Fire Department. Fremont, our newest club, has already participated in the Relay For Life and has had representation in every district, region, and federation event since their inception! President JoEllen, PR Person "Extraodinaire," knows that participation at all levels of Soroptimist is the key to success.

District I clubs, I hope you will remember to include me on your communication lists. (Snail or email.) I enjoy hearing what you are doing and will try to help you promote your events. I will attend whenever possible because any excuse to PAR-TY will do!

My personal goal this biennium is to inspire District I clubs to have a minimum of 25 regular members with an average meeting attendance of 21. I really wanted a goal of 30 per club, but I have promised certain voices in my head to be realistic! Happy (Soroptimist) New Year!

District III
Carol Finley Stein, Director

District III is doing a bang-up job in starting the New Soroptimist Year and Sharing Soroptimist Spirit! Already, clubs are meeting and planning fund-raisers and events for the fall. With the addition of the new Central Solano County club, we now number twelve, and every club was represented at the Leadership Retreat. What spirit! We are going to Achieve Growth by Sharing!

First on the agenda for the district will be an all-day Presidents' Round Table and Workshop scheduled for Saturday, September 7, in Vacaville. It will be an in-depth sharing of information and protocol and problem solving among the presidents of the twelve clubs. Other Round Tables will be held throughout the district so the presidents of each club can become familiar with other cities in the district. We are Sharing Soroptimist Spirit among our presidents and they are spreading it around their clubs. We are going to Achieve Growth by Sharing!

One of the goals of District III presidents is for members to get to know members from other clubs. One example of working together is that all the Napa Valley clubs participated in the Relay for Life. Other clubs participated in their own cities. We are Sharing Soroptimist Spirit with one another in our clubs and spreading it around our communities. We are going to Achieve Growth by Sharing!

On Sunday, October 6, the District III Meeting will be held in Benicia. Founder Region Board members and Region committee members will be sharing news with the membership, and the district's new literacy project will be explained. Clubs will also bring raffle baskets to raise Funds for Fellowship. The day promises to be full of fun and full of information. Be sure to come. We are Sharing Soroptimist Spirit in our district and spreading it with Founder Region. We are going to Achieve Growth by Sharing!

District IV
Linda Simon, Director

District IV has several goals. First, we will focus on membership. For clubs with less than 20 members, the goal will be to assist clubs brainstorm ways to increase membership and retain the members they have.

District IV will be encouraged to have a joint project that will raise awareness of our clubs and get us some good publicity.

We will attempt to make the President's Round Tables more enjoyable so all presidents will want to attend and they will encourage their President Elect or Vice President to attend. If presidents are enthusiastic, it will encourage members to participate in leadership roles.

We will encourage presidents to have a minimum of four representatives from their clubs attend the Leadership Retreat. I want presidents to know the District Directors need their participation in order to plan their terms of office. It's also a way to encourage future leaders.

In addition to "official visits" I want to attend an event at a minimum of five clubs this year and do so the following year as well.

We are encouraging the sharing of information and ideas. On a monthly basis I'd like to let all my clubs know "what's happening" in other clubs. By this I mean, what events are on tap in our District. If we know far enough in advance, perhaps we can attend each others events and show our support, encouragement, and enthusiasm for Soroptimism.

District VI
Julie Kamanawa-Kala , Director

District VI recently had our Leadership Training on 27 July 2002 here on Oahu. Our hostess club was Waikiki. The first President's Round Table was held at the same meeting. All but two clubs, Guam and The Marianas, were in attendance. The Marianas club was unable to attend due to their recent typhoon.

Our next Presidents Round Table will soon follow Founder Region Board meeting. District VI will once again have a joint club project, Helping Hands, mentoring foster children.

Aloha
