Flexibility -- Fun -- Future
Founder Region Member Services Committee
Susan Joyce, Chair

The Founder Region Member Services Committee believes that the clubs of Founder Region will SOAR indeed if we implement our three keys words of: FLEXIBILITY and FUN while looking ahead to our FUTURE!!

With the current tragedy in our nation, it is very evident that organizations like Soroptimist are and will be needed more than ever before, in our communities, our nation and the world. Soroptimists of Founder Region, we must set goals for chartering new clubs and for the recruitment and retention of our members! This must be our highest priority!!

CHARTERING NEW CLUBS:

Founder Region clubs and members, we have some wonderful news to share! We will soon be holding meetings of prospective members for four new clubs in Founder Region thanks to the following clubs for voting to sponsor them:

  • Soroptimist International of Alameda....City of Fremont
  • Soroptimist International of Healdsburg...City of Windsor
  • Soroptimist International of Sonoma Valley...City of Petaluma
  • Soroptimist International of Vallejo...Central Solano County

There are many more areas waiting for us to charter and some of your clubs have been contacted and have been requested to consider giving the gift of membership by forming new clubs...you can do it...we are here to assist you!

RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS FOR YOUR CLUB:

PLEASE REMEMBER...WE HAVE SET A GOAL THAT ALL CLUBS IN FOUNDER REGION INCREASE THEIR MEMBERSHIP BY TWENTY PERCENT NET GROWTH BY THE END OF THIS BIENNIUM...FOUNDER REGION HAS DONE THIS IN THE PAST, WE CAN DO IT NOW!!

The Founder Region Member Services Committee has been sharing with you our vision with respect to the new membership types. In brief, this is:

Embarking: These prospective members have positions in the work place that prior to now would not have qualified them to be Soroptimists. Or they are seeking an education that will enable them to achieve high level positions in business and the professions. They are classified unless they are full time students. We encourage you to seek these prospective members out for they are our future. This is a time in their lives when we as Soroptimists can assist them in reaching their goals, and can mentor them into developing their potential. That is a service in and of itself. If we recruit these members now, we should be able to retain them for their lifetime. However, we need to be flexible as to dues, attendance, and participation requirements.

Regular: (previously called Active members) These members are the foundation of our club. And they are our lifeline in that only Regular memberships count toward keeping a club charter active. We must recruit and retain Regular members by using creative means that involve great flexibility. We must involve them within the club in a way where they can best serve and be served. These members are classified. Only Regular members may serve as delegate to region/federation conferences/conventions. Only Regular members may serve in office beyond the club level.

Retired/Unemployed: These members are not classified. They do not have to have been former Soroptimists. They are anyone who has held a job during their lifetime. They are the persons who have much experience and knowledge to offer and who may have extra time for our clubs. However, as with Embarking memberships, we need to be flexible as to dues, attendance, and participation requirements.

Life Members: These are our club members who became life members by July 1, 2001. They will be acknowledged as Life Members for their lifetime by Soroptimist International of the Americas. If they change back from life member to any other class of membership, they may not return to being "official" life members. Life members do not pay dues at Region level, but they do pay Region Fellowship fees, and do pay dues at International and Federation levels, and liability insurance at Federation level. Their dues at Federation level are less than the other classes of membership. These members are your club history, your club's corporate memory. Life members can be great assets to your club. Your club may grant life membership within your club beyond July 1, 2001 if you choose to do so, but at Region and Federation level, they will be acknowledged only within Regular or Retired/Unemployed classes of membership.

Your club should set forth in your club Bylaws the dues, attendance, and participation requirements for the various classes of membership, including your life members. We encourage you to be very flexible.

Please be reminded that all members of your club are eligible to hold office, speak, make motions, and vote...according to what you set forth in your club Bylaws.

All members of your club may hold the office of club president; however, only Regular members may be delegates to region conference/federation convention. So, if a member other than a Regular member is club president, then someone else must serve instead as delegate.

All members may serve as a chair or a member of Founder Region committees. Only Regular members may hold office at the Region/Federation level.

ELOISE B. CUSHING MEMORIAL AWARD FORM

You are receiving the Eloise B. Cushing Soroptimist Orientation and Leadership Training award application in the Founder Region November Mailing. Please note the deadline of January 31, 2002. We are encouraging 100% participation of our clubs please. The form has been revised and you should find it much easier to complete. Our committee will be calling clubs who don't submit an application!! If you have any questions or would like assistance, please call a representative of the Founder Region Member Services Committee!!

SOROPTIMIST ORIENTATION AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING:

Soroptimist Orientation and Leadership Training is a necessity for building and maintaining a healthy Soroptimist Club!

It is essential that our clubs present ongoing Soroptimist Orientation and Leadership Training to their members. This can be accomplished through dashes of S.O.L.T. at club meetings, in club newsletters, in handouts at club meetings, through holding special S.O.L.T. meetings other than at club meetings, one on one education, distribution of Soroptimist training materials, etc.

NEW MEMBER SERVICES COMMITTEE MATERIALS!!

The Member Services Committee has developed new materials, as shown below. We encourage you to make use of them and give us your feed back as to their value.

  1. Founder Region Chartering New Clubs Guide and Charter Check List. You should have received your club's copy at your District Meeting.
  2. Soroptimist Orientation and Leadership Training (SOLT) Information Resources sheet. You are encouraged to duplicate this for all of your members. This was distributed at our May, 2001 Conference. If you need another copy, please let a representative of the Member Services Committee know.
  3. Prospective Member Referral Form. This was included in the November mailing. You are encouraged to duplicate it for all of your membership. We are encouraging you to share the wealth of your knowledge of prospective members with other clubs, not only in Founder Region, but throughout the world!
  4. Mall Walking Guide. This is a creative way for finding prospective members for your club by actually canvassing mall, strip malls, industrial areas, and business to business. It was included in the November mailing.
  5. Suggested Committee Structure for Clubs with 20 Members or Less. This is an idea, a guide that you can use to tailor the individual committee needs of your own club. This was included in the November mailing.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER...WE ARE AVAILABLE TO ASSIST YOUR CLUB!

Please call on us for:

  1. Presentations at your club meetings with respect to Recruitment and Retention or Soroptimist Orientation and Leadership Training
