Environment Tips

Sandi Alstrand
Region Environment Chair

Here is a tip that will help our environment. When you go to Starbucks (or any Starbucks-like fast service coffee shop), bring in your own mug or travel mug. The Soroptimist fellowship mug given out at last years conference would be perfect, however, if you were not fortunate enough to get one of those, any will do. Ask the Barrister to use your mug instead of a paper cup. At Starbucks you will get a few cents off of your order and you will be saving trees and landfill in the process! (This tip is courtesy of environmental activist Julia Butterfly Hill)

Book recommendations:
If you're in the market for a new vehicle, check out ACEEE's Green Book: The Environmental Guide to Cars and Trucks, Model Year 2002, by John M. DeCicco & James Kliesch. This book ranks vehicles according to environmental friendliness. ACEEE stands for the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy and is a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC. Cost of the book is $8.95 and can be found at most bookstores.

Another great book is Earth Odyssey - Around the World in Search of Our Environmental Future by Mark Hertsgaard. Hertsgaard is a journalist who actually did travel around the world visiting many countries to see first hand the state of the environment. His writing is interesting as well as informative. Good info for possible Soroptimist projects?....The publisher is Broadway Books, New York.
